Keep Middle School Growing

Help me give my students the tools they need to grow their own food! Included are a home for their future ducklings, pitch forks to turn compost over, rakes to gather leaves and grass clippings and more.

My Project

We have been working this year on bringing science to life in the classroom. Included are some of the tools my students will need to gather their composting materials from around our campus. Those materials include grass clippings, leaves, and already mulched tree limbs. The rakes, pitchfork, and 72-gallon garden bags will all help students collect their own compost material. When we teach the carbon cycle, and specifically the decomposition process, it's always difficult for the kids to fully conceptualize it, but with these supplies, my kids will be able to witness the decomposition process for themselves! The thermometer will allow students to see the increase in temperature as the compost pile heats up and begins to work.

These materials will help bring the science concepts we've been learning about to life.

With these supplies, my students will come closer to being able to see, in their classroom, the wonders of life. We'll be able to grow seeds in the classroom, create the soil to grow those seeds, and hatch our very own chicks and ducklings! The dog kennel/crate will be used as the ducklings' and chicks' very first home! And the timers will be used in tandem with the grow lights we received in a previous project. They will also help to demonstrate the scientific process where we can experiment with the amount of light given to specific plants and hypothesize about their effect.

These materials will eventually be used so students can do their own fundraising to support their local community. In doing so students will gain a practical understanding of the business end of the agricultural industry.

The ramen is given to the kids as a reward for various activities.
