This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As the Special Education lead at my school, we identified that there is a significant need in dramatically increasing reading levels. Most students are reading two or three grade levels below their grade level. Generally, when it comes to student success, it is always linked to their reading level. We are launching a new teaching initiative of parallel teaching. Students will be able to receive specially designed instruction based on their learning style. Then, take part in an enriching Harkness model student-led discussion.
My students are engaged and motivated to learn.
We have a "melting pot" of cultural diversity and needs. From English language learners, hearing impaired to varied learning disabled. I work in a Title I school with 90 percent free lunch (low income).
My Project
According to research, students retain up to 90% of what they have learned if they actively practiced with each other, have a student-led discussion and have a variety of activities during the lesson.
Using a large classroom timer in all subjects including art, gym,, electives, math/sciences allows the overhead projector to be used for teaching/modeling, videos/images or other purposes, while at the same time, it teaches students time management by keeping track of the remaining time for an activity.
This allows students to actively manage their time by managing their time with a large classroom digital timer. This teaches them long term self management skills for their college and career readiness. This structure will greatly help our school move forward to next year's instructional focus.
