This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Last year our gym teacher retired and New York City cut the school budget by a significant amount. In turn, our school did not hire a new gym teacher. In order to meet the standards and keep our students fit and healthy, we are teaching gym ourselves.
We work in a New York City public school.
Our students come from low socio-economic families. Many of them do not eat healthy and do not get much exercise. Some of our students are overweight. One student actually weighs over 125 pounds, which is very unhealthy.
My Project
In order to help us teach our students to live a healthy life style by staying fit and eating healthy, we need some resources to help us meet these goals. We want to teach them what it means to be healthy, how we can stay healthy, and also teach them different fitness activities to promote balance, posture, cardiovascular workouts, as well as other activities. The books will help us teach health to the students and the DVDs will help us teach gym, specifically kid fitness and yoga.
Keeping students fit will have a positive impact now and in the future.
We hope that if we teach students how to eat right and stay fit early, they will take what they have learned and carry it with them throughout their lives. Children that are overweight have a difficult time fitting in with their peers, if we provide them with the tools to be healthy early on, it will hopefully prevent unhealthy habits and unhealthy children.
