This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a high poverty neighborhood in south Philadelphia. We are an extremely diverse group - we speak 7 different languages at home, and are from many different countries! We've started cycling this year - meaning, students transition between different classrooms for different subjects. This is a whole new ballgame for them and a big shift from third grade.
My students are fantastic readers and writers, but as fourth graders, they aren't always the most organized.
We need some supplies to help us keep our belongings straight and maximize our learning time.
My Project
Our school moved to a cycling model this year, where students transition between 3 classrooms throughout the day for their core subjects (English Language Arts, Math and Science/Social Studies). For the first time, I am teaching English Language Arts to about 90 4th graders.
Cycling is a big shift for 9- and 10-year-olds who are used to having one teacher all day.
These supplies will help my students navigate the classroom supplies and take ownership over their own learning. We will spend most of our time in small groups and workshops, so my students will need to function independently in the classroom. These bins, crates and folders will help them do so.
