My Students

Immediately after my student teaching, I was offered the opportunity of a lifetime and given a first grade classroom! It has been an amazing learning experience for me and my students! Due to the fact this is my first year teaching, I am trying to grow my resources. Right now, I am working on making my classroom feel more like home and would like to expand my reading materials and create a relaxing, safe spot to have my learners be able to go to and read.

My students come from all walks of life, all with very different learning needs.

I currently have nineteen students in total, with abilities ranging from beginner ELL’s to advanced readers! My school serves students in preschool through third grade and has a high population of low income families. There are some students in my class that their only opportunity to read a book is at school! This is one of my main reasons for wanting to focus on the literacy aspect of the classroom, to continue to foster the love of reading!

My Project

Currently in my classroom, students are able to read at their seats on the cold tile or on small square rugs. Students often choose to do another activity rather than read to self from their book boxes. I firmly believe it is because they do not have a soft and comfortable area to read in.

According to research, comfort matters!

A considerable body of research about environmental design shows the positive effect comfort can have on learning, human productivity and creativity.

By providing them a fluffy new area rug and some soft and cozy pillows, I believe that students will be motivated to grab a pillow and curl up with a good book. The more students read, the better they become. I am confident that this project will help them meet their grade level benchmarks in reading.

Providing these items will also help the students have a safe, warm, nurturing environment. Students will have a space that they can take a break and relax in. Even in first grade, the list of demands on students have grown exponentially within the last couple of years and a place to stop and destress in, will also help with classroom behaviors.
