Keep Calm and Read On!

My students need several leveled book collections that they will find interesting, such as the Step Into Reading and the I Can Read book collections, while being on different levels! These books will engage them during their independent reading time.

My Students

Walking into my classroom every day, I have the privilege to spend 6 1/2 hours with the most amazing little people. I teach in Greenville, SC, in a school that is considered high poverty. Poverty does not define us, it just pushes us to reach our students in different ways.

My kindergarten classroom is home to 24-26 students.

These students are a melting pot of diversity. In fact, our entire school falls into this category. We celebrate our diversity and foster a love for learning. In my classroom we focus on being a community, more like a family. This creates a safe environment where all worries are left at the door. My students show up excited to learn every day and seeing their "light bulbs" come on reminds me daily of how rewarding my job really is.

My Project

"There is no such thing as a child who hates to read, there are only children who have not found the right book." Frank Serafini. One of the best parts of my day is meeting with my small reading groups. During this time I meet with 5 students and we focus on becoming better readers. While meeting with my small groups, my other students are rotating through centers. One of the major centers is their Independent Reading center. During this center, students get their reading basket and read for pure enjoyment. My students need several leveled book collections that they will find interesting, such as the Step Into Reading and the I Can Read book collections, while being on different levels! These books will engage them during their independent reading time. Having more books in my room to rotate in and out of their baskets will keep students engaged in reading. I want this center to become the center they look forward to the most. I want them to be excited to get their basket and find out what is inside.

The variety of books in my project will help foster a love for reading that I hope will be instilled in my students, for the rest of their lives.

Kindergarten is the foundation, where it all begins. By donating to my project you are helping my students find a true love for reading.
