My students need books that reflect their ethnic backgrounds to celebrate their diversity and learn about their classmates. The library is the perfect place in which to discover likes and differences in others.

My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical".
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My Project
My town is focusing on providing equity among all groups of students. Once way in which to do that is to have books and authors that represent the student population. That is not an easy task with a limited budget.
I have listed diverse books and other books about kindness.
At times I have to speak about being respectful and kind to each other. If as a society we appreciated each other's uniqueness kindness would come naturally.
By having books about different ethnic backgrounds therefore, educating students early is my attempt to make the world a kinder place to live.
