Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have been an educator in an underprivileged area for over a decade. The situations that we may see in the media are the realities that my students face every day of their lives. I have students that are homeless, in foster care, come to school hungry, and more than half live in single-family households. One of them told me that he lives in a "back house with no kitchen" while another came to school one day and told me that he witnessed his father die right in front of him just the day before. Although I cannot control their home environment, I can create a safe, structured learning environment for my students.
No one ever said teaching was easy, but someone's got to do it.
What can make it easier though is to have a good support system, and to be well-equipped with the proper instructional tools to get the job done! I surely would like to give my students a chance to thrive and make something of themselves.
My Project
I have been trying to set up a classroom library for a while, and I think I am close to having enough books. I now face another hurdle which is organizing the books I already have in my classroom. The book bins are ideal for a functional classroom library. These will help them choose books that are within their appropriate level.
The individual leveled reader holders are meant to hold individual students' library books, something to call their own when they have so little.
I truly would love to share my passion for books and learning with my students. I can only hope they get lost in a book the way I do.
This project came to full fruition when we returned from winter break. I assigned a reading log for the few weeks they were off. Sadly, less than half of the class returned with completed logs, many came back blank. Having very limited access to books was more dire a problem than I imagined. Help me help them.
