I have the privilege of working in Chicago Public Schools with amazing Diverse Learner students. My students are hardworking and enthusiastic with a desire to learn. Almost all of my students are from low-income families and come from a neighborhood that is economically deprived. However, they deserve an opportunity at a great education which can open many doors for them in the future. It is my goal to create an environment for my students that will allow them to expand and succeed.
My Project
I would like to put together a designated area in my classroom with a basket of stress relievers for students when they need a break. This area in our classroom will be known as the "Calm Down Corner", "Zen Zone" or the "Chill Zone". Students can go into this area when they are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or need to de-escalate. One student at a time will be able to check-in and set a timer that lasts for approximately five to ten minutes. During these five to ten minutes, the student will be able to pick something from the basket of stress relievers , use the iPad to listen to music that is relaxing, and complete a reflection form.
