My Students

If you are creative, you can solve almost any problem that comes up in life. We need to teach our children how to be creative. In this digital age where they spend so much time playing video games and no time using their imaginations we need to keep art lessons in our classrooms, now more than ever!

I teach a class of kids who already bear lots of labels.

They are Gifted and Talented, English language learners and most of them are already labeled "at-risk" because their family income falls below the poverty line. They are incredibly bright and learn things very quickly. It just amazes me that many have never even held a paintbrush before they come to me! I find that visuals help a lot with ELL students. They may not be able to explain to me in words the answer, but they can draw or paint it. All of my students love anything to do with art and literally cheer when I say we are going to "create" something. I think we are all artists at that age, before life takes that creativity away from us.

My Project

Unfortunately, in this age of test scores being held up as the be all end all for students-art falls to the wayside. I use it anyway! I think it's a remarkable tool to give students an outlet for their ideas. My students need various sets of drawing paper, paints, paintbrushes and books to publish their creative works. They paint something and then write about it. We paint what Jazz Music looks like, we paint Starry, Starry Night as Snowy, Snowy Night in our winter unit. I really try to incorporate critical thinking skills in those lessons. Any time they are forced to use their imaginations and create something new, they are challenging those dendrites in their brains a little bit more. It makes them better, well-rounded students!

I can't even articulate how much keeping art in our classroom will mean to my kiddos.

When you can get students excited about what they are doing they will rise to any challenge. Where will our future architects, graphic designers, our writers and artists come from? If we don't continue to do art activities in the classroom this generation of kids will grow up to be very boring! This donation would mean so much to my kids. Not only keeping learning fun but giving them an outlet for their ideas.
