Each year, some of my students choose to research and give a presentation on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutation for their assignment on genetic disorders. These particular gene mutations can cause breast cancer, and having a breast model with a lump is an excellent tool for teaching students what to look for.
Throughout my teaching years, I've sadly witnessed a number of students lose their mothers to breast cancer, and I know of many other students who helplessly watched a parent’s fight for survival throughout their cancer treatment.
It is heartbreaking to see a young person struggle with the loss a parent. Some of this suffering can be prevented. The key to surviving breast cancer is early detection and treatment. Together we can help provide the advantage of early detection that so many will need to help fight cancer.
My Project
Students need to learn the proper technique for doing a breast self-exam. The Female Breast with Cancer Anatomical Model will be shared with Biology teachers, Health and Guidance teachers and our school nurse. This donation will help us to promote monthly self-exams and demonstrate the correct way to do an exam. When we study the subject of genetic mutations and learn about the BRCA genes, students will be able to incorporate using this model during their presentations.
A model breast will give students hands-on practice for doing monthly self-exams.
Students will have the opportunity to become comfortable performing an exam, and the breast model will teach them what to look and feel for.
Knowledge is power. This project gives students more power in the fight against cancer.
