Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each day my students work together to make a newscast to inform and inspire our community. Their creativity develops a constructive culture and invites collaboration between both students and staff. Every week my students announce upcoming events, lead each class in the pledge of allegiance, and edit together a news package focusing on important stories at our school.
We are the KCP Academy news crew and we use film to make a positive impact on our lives, school, and community.
Our Arts, Media, and Entertainment course gives students the opportunity to interact with digital media, express themselves by sharing their personal stories, and encounter new mediums for creativity through project-based learning. From what I've witnessed, my students have experiences vastly different from the narratives portrayed by mainstream media, and it's crucial for them to know their story matters.
My Project
The next goal of our newscast is to complete an introduction, which highlights all the significant places in our historic neighborhood of Barrio Logan.
Our hope is to build confidence within the students at our school to take pride in where they come from by showing a unique perspective of what they see everyday with a new video drone.
In the past, we used pictures from the staff to create a short montage to start our newscast. We want to build on this segment and create our own original content, which we can use to compete in the Innovative Video in Education (iVIE) Student Film Festival. The video drone will not only help us in our advancement of learning new technology, but also allow us to continue to grow our video production program with new professional equipment.
