Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students make up the third grade ICT class in a high poverty school in Washington Heights. Despite the fact that almost 90% of the students in my school are from low income families, my class is made up of an amazing group of children who love to learn. These children love school. They are inquisitive, creative, and very enthusiastic. They absolutely love reading, and many of them are approaching grade level and some are even reading above grade level. I can't wait to watch them grow even more this year!
My Project
My students need exciting accessible books for struggling readers. Books for emergent readers are often boring and don't spark interest for those children who already find reading unappealing. The Treehouse series along with Big Nate, Stink and Stick Dog series feature popular characters that children love.
The students gravitate more towards books that have graphic novel set ups and pictures.
These materials will grade my students' attention. There are many low level readers, and it is hard to come up with a variety of high interest books on lower levels. I have scavenged the internet and put together a list! This project will bring that list to life in our library.
