Kapa: Printing Our Culture, One Stamp at a Time

Help me give my students the tools to explore Hawaiian kapa art through stamping, drawing, and storytelling with kraft paper, ink pads, cardstock, and kid-friendly markers.

My Project

In our Hawaiian Studies classroom, art is more than expression—it’s a connection to our kūpuna (ancestors), our ʻāina (land), and each other. My students are bright, curious, and full of aloha. They come from all walks of life, each bringing a special spark to our learning space. What unites them is their excitement to learn hands-on, to move, to create, and to feel the stories of our islands.

One of our favorite traditions is kapa. In ancient Hawaiʻi, kapa was made from wauke bark and decorated with symbolic patterns. Today, we’ll be bringing that tradition to life using modern tools: kraft paper as our kapa, large stamp pads, markers, and cardstock to design and showcase student-made prints.

These materials will let each student design their own kapa print—using repeating patterns, symbols, and vibrant colors to tell their story. Kraft paper sheets (small and large) give us a canvas that feels earthy and real. Cardstock allows students to mount their final work to share or gift. Washable stamp pads are perfect for tactile, mess-free exploration. Retractable Crayola markers add layers of detail and ease of use for all ages.

This project promotes sensory exploration, cultural learning, and creative confidence. It allows students to learn about traditional Hawaiian art forms while making their own modern-day kapa creations.
