My students need butterfly starter kits so they can observe and better understand the life cycle of butterflies. They need the marble tower kit and magna-tiles to construct, challenge themselves, and problem solve together.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
40 energetic kindergartners fill two kinder classes at our school! They come from a variety of socioeconomic, racial, and educational backgrounds -- some new to school, some on their third year in our school. Half of our students speak English at home, half speak Spanish at home, and all are learning to be bilingual learners. Over 2/3 of our school is eligible for free or reduced lunch and we are a Title I school based on students' language development needs. Our kindergartners love animals, outdoor exploration, and building!
My Project
Students will long remember the experience of learning about the life cycle of butterflies -- not so much because of the books we read and conversations we have -- but mostly because of the larva we observe and life cycle we witness! Students will compare the life cycles we have studied to those of the live butterflies we help raise in our classroom, caring for the creatures and them releasing them into the wild.
Also, our young engineers are constantly looking for new ways to be challenges and problems to solve.
Marble towers and magnatiles formations will create these opportunities as students work with their peers to find new ways to construct.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
