My Students
Tie my shoes! Zip my coat! Help me lock the bathroom door! My goal for my students is to eliminate the need to use these phrases (or gestures!) by the end of the school year by providing adapted materials for them to practice skills of daily living.
I teach students with autism and speech/language disorders in a newly opened K-2 Autistic Support classroom in an urban public school.
In the few months they have been in school, my little people have made such incredible progress that they are ready to tackle the same rigorous academic tasks as their peers outside of our doors. They are eager to learn and motivated to succeed!
Additionally, my school offers programming for students with autism up to 8th grade. Rest assured, any materials procured through donations will be shared amongst my dedicated colleagues and their students!
My Project
I've selected items that address multiple skills and multiple needs. The Pocket Book of Skills has 10 fine motor practice boards for the beginning learner. More advanced students can move onto the I Can Dress Myself Vest to practice skills more naturally (by wearing them)! The Looper Shoe tying activity provides adapted support so laces are flopping all around when the little fingers try to manipulate them, and the latching board allows students to practice opening and closing common household latches and fastener. With these materials, my students will be on the fast track to independence!
Mastering functional skills of daily living not only boosts student's self-esteem by giving them a sense of independence and accomplishment but it also lessens the stress of parents, teachers, and caregivers who dedicate significant time and effort to meeting the needs of a child with motor delays.
