My Students
Children with autism are part of our future, too. I have high expectations for my students and even greater aspirations.
I teach students with autism and speech/language disorders in a new K-2 Autistic Support classroom in an urban public school.
In the few months they have been in school my little people have made such incredible progress that they are ready to tackle the same rigorous academic tasks as their peers outside of our doors. They are eager to learn and motivated to succeed!
My Project
It is crucial that my little people have access to hands-on activities. Manipulatives and centers are not only very interesting and motivating to the curious learner, but many have the added benefit of providing fine motor skills practice, opportunities to develop independence, and they allow for routines for the care of and accountability for classroom materials. The math materials I have requested provide all of the aforementioned as well as reinforce my instruction in the prerequisite skills needed to become competent mathematicians.
My students do not lack the cognitive ability to learn, rather they lack access to materials and resources that provide opportunities for them to learn in their own unique way.
I've selected products that address multiple skills such as Peg number boards, and Flip, Feel, and Write numbers that provide practice in counting, fine motor, and sensory skills. These items are interactive, fun, and exciting and best of all motivate children to learn!
