My Students

Our school teems with eager kindergarten and first grade students who love to learn--seven classes full of them! They eagerly tumble in the door each day with smiles on their faces and with fingers twitching with eagerness to get started learning about their world.

As so many of our students are English Language Learners, using iPads to share their ideas visually really helps support their understanding of tricky concepts.

Students love snapping shots of the school garden, the changing seasons, and even of one another as we grow and change (losing teeth, get taller, etc.) We love admiring one anothers' photos too, seeing the beauty in the science! Students also enjoy showing how they creatively solve math problems using manipulatives, number lines, or arrow language--sharing their solutions with the whole class as their video is mirrored to a screen. It's great to see our natural actors hamming it up as they show how they solved the problem while shy students quietly glow with growing confidence.

My Project

Unfortunately, each of our kindergarten and first grade classrooms only has about 3 of these devices to share amongst their 20+ students. If each of our 7 classrooms had just one more iPad per room, there would be enough for students to share for small group math and science projects with about 5 students using each device. Our young people are as careful as they can be with technology, but just to be secure, we need a case for each iPad--so students can be confident, as they take photos and videos, that they won't accidentally break their device.

Learning experts say that if you can teach a concept, you have truly learned it.

With more iPads in our classroom, we will enable our young K and 1st grade students to teach what they have learned about math and science to others--solidifying the concepts they know, while sharing the gift of their insights with peers. And they will do all this, while learning about photography, acting, and movie-making--leveraging their creative side as they grow their knowledge of math & science!
