My Students

Middle school can be one of the most maniacal, yet meaningful times for adolescents; their bodies are changing and so are the ways in which they view themselves and their world. Teachers need a toolbox full of practices to meet the needs of our diverse group of kids. Books lend themselves as tools for reaching these needs.

Middle school begins the formal operational stage of cognitive development where adolescents start to think more critically about the world and their place in it.

What better way to meet them than with a diverse collection of books, both for self-awareness and recognition, and an avenue for understanding and appreciation of the world around them.

My Project

The Hate You Give is a novel that is thought-provoking and provides an insightful look into the harsh realities of our modern day world, especially for our adolescents and young adults who are just becoming aware of their own identities and their place in the world.

The Hate You Give provides a textual passage that lends itself to classroom conversation, thoughtful debate and opportunities for reflection.

Students and teachers will read the novel and closely examine and discuss the relevant themes. Discourse is the only means of working towards change.
