Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is in a low-income and high poverty community. I teach in a self-contained Exceptional Student Education classroom to students with intellectual disabilities in Kindergarten through 5th grade.
While all children are special in their own way, my kiddos are truly AMAZING!
I want to give each of my students every opportunity to reach their fullest potential. I want my students to have fun while they are learning. I feel truly blessed to be able to witness them light up as they learn about themselves and the world around them.
My Project
My Kindergarten through 5th grade Special Education students engage in several different writing activities every day. We have four different spelling levels, as well as students who are working on letter/number and sight word recognition. Some of my students are learning to write simple words such as: cat, rug, and pig, some are writing simple sentences, and others are writing essays. In math, we have some students who add and subtract by drawing and counting or crossing out pictures, some students adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers by regrouping, and others are working on their multiplication skills.
Even with all of the academic writing that is expected of my students, they still LOVE to write for fun.
The variety of reusable writing boards will allow all of my students the ability to write what I need them to and what they want to. They can practice spelling, work out math problems, trace letters and numbers, as well as write or draw for fun. We will say good-bye to wasted paper and dry erase markers for good!
