it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a special education teacher in a 2nd through 4th grade self contained autistic classroom in a very low income, Title 1 school. 95% of the students in our school qualify for free and reduced price lunch. There are lots challenges each school year meeting the needs of the students academically, socially, and emotionally.
My students, who fall all across the autism spectrum, come to school, work hard, and do their best inspite of their disability.
They are faced with many challenges such as communication and academic achievement, yet they come to school with a smile on their face ready to work! They have a desire to achieve their goals and we do everything we can in the classroom to help them get there!
My Project

Wobble stools will help my students be able to seek sensory input in an appropriate way while continuing to work in the classroom.
Could you imagine having to sit in the same chair all day every day? As adults, we can get up and move around when we can no longer sit still. Autism creates unique difficulties for my students while trying to stay focused on their work. When learning new skills or working on things that are extra difficult for them, they begin seeking sensory input to process everything happening around them. The lights are flickering, the computer is buzzing, the student next to them is tapping the table... add in the directions from the teacher and the task demand, all of this is overwhelming for my students.
When all the distractions get to be too much, they begin looking for ways to calm their bodies and minds back down. Often times this results in tipping their chairs backwards or to the side, risking falling out and banging their heads or squishing toes of other students or themselves. They also begin participating in self stimulating behaviors like hand flapping, rocking, spinning, or repetitive vocalizations.
With the option of being able to wiggle, rock, and wobble in the stools while working, they are able to receive the right amount of sensory input, increasing their attention to the task at hand. They are able to focus and complete their work.
