My Students

My students come from a small, rural community. Our school is a K-2 building where 80% of the students receive free or reduced price lunch. Despite any challenges my kiddos face, each and every one of them strive to be the best second-grader they can be each day. Our district's resources are limited to textbook purchases; therefore not much is left to be spent on extra support in the classroom.

My Project

Nonfiction reading is an important part of our daily lives; therefore, focusing on nonfiction reading is important for several reasons. The first reason for including nonfiction reading is that it provides a wide range of subjects for my kiddos to pick what they want to learn about. Another reason is that it promotes learning across the curriculum. These nonfiction books will also lend themselves as mentor texts as my students begin writing nonfiction texts themselves.

Students must learn to read expository texts and be able to ask and answer questions they may have about the world around them.

By spending more time with nonfiction and expository texts, my students will be able to understand the complexity of these texts and I can better help to prepare them for the increased academic rigor they will encounter in the higher grades.
