Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are full of questions about the world around them, but much of what is available to read is above their reading level. They have plenty of story books, but need more non-fiction, especially about topics currently in the news. The Weekly Reader is just what we need!
More than half of my students are limited speakers of English.
Their parents have set high academic standards for them, as evidenced by their enrollment in our school, which is a fundamental school. We have the highest test scores is our city, and do as well as schools without our challenges.
My Project
Students will be able to read about current events in a newspaper format especially designed for their grade level. In addition, the Weekly Reader offers online resources to enrich our curriculum, and practice for test taking. The reading comprehension skills packets will help students read non-fiction and gain more from their independent reading.
When our students enter the workforce, they must be able to read and understand directions.
To be informed citizens, they must be able to analyze text, use logic, and draw conclusions. The sooner we start students on these skills, the better.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
