This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
An organized, well-functioning classroom provides an easier learning environment! So often students have lost their pencils, can't find an eraser, and glue is nowhere to be found. And getting these basic supplies from the school/district can take days if they are even provided.
My dynamic, second grade students attend a 100% Title I school that is located in an urban, low-socioeconomic school in California.
Because of the economic hardships, many of my students' parents are continually looking for work or working long hours to make ends meet. A majority of the students are English language learners raised in monolingual (Spanish) or bilingual homes.
My Project
I strive to provide an organized environment for my students in this crazy, mixed-up world. Unfortunately classroom materials are often lost and instruction is interrupted as the search ensues. By providing pencil boxes, students will be able to confine their pencils, pens, erasers, glue, and crayons in one location. They will be ready for learning!
There are times when I have to print or copy assignments in a pinch and I cannot leave the classroom. I purchased my own printer/copier but purchasing the toner is getting more costly each year. And I often send memos home to the students' families on a bright paper so that it is noticed. I have to provide this on my own.
We have access to some materials that are provided by the district but it often takes days or weeks to get the supplies needed. And the quality of the supplies has declined greatly over the years. I would love to be able to simply open the closet and have the needed materials ready for my students!
It's the simple things that make life easier in the classroom.
Every year I spend hundreds of dollars to provide my students with basic, high-quality supplies because they are not being provided by the district. It is getting harder to get supplies because of budget cuts. I want to have supplies on hand so that instruction does not have to be interrupted while one student is hunting for a pencil or I have to run to another building to make one copy because the toner has run out.
