Around eighty-five percent of my students receive free or reduced priced lunch. It is difficult to get them to school and even harder to get them here with supplies, ready to learn. Once they enter my classroom, my focus is on them. I am trying to prepare my students for college and the world. I am creating an environment where collaboration is strong and all students should have the tools to express their ideas.
Sometimes they don't know where they are going after school that day, as their family is homeless.
How many of you remember hanging your good grades on the fridge? What if you didn't have one to do that with? I have students that hang their work in my room, as that is the only place they can hang it with pride. How can I ask students that don't know where their next meal will come from, to get supplies? I want to provide them with the basic classroom supplies, so that barrier is broken. My goal is to create an interactive notebook, which will increase their/my cost for supplies.
My Project
What if you were told you had to choose between food and school supplies? I am trying to break through that barrier and have supplies ready for my students that need them! Many students will avoid class because they do not have the necessary supplies for class. I want to make sure that they can be prepared and ready to learn, so I can focus on teaching and they can focus on learning!
I am creating an interactive notebook for my students to help keep them organized and with a resource to study from.
Composition books are more expensive than the spiral kind, but it also keeps students from tearing out pages and getting caught on objects. I also need pencils and colored pens to help with note-taking and organizing thoughts in the book. Post-it notes are a great resource for jotting down ideas and quick checks on problems.
