Imagine 2nd graders trying to learn science from a textbook! Pictures of solids, liquids, and gases. Charts about different animal groups. Science is not to be learned passively through photographs; it needs to be learned by performing experiments and experiencing exciting hands-on moments.
My 150 second graders are budding scientists!
The vast majority come from lower socioeconomic histories that provide little in the way of background experience. Because we live in a highly urban environment, where kids don't freely play outside enough, nearly all of my students lack a general understanding of the natural world. My second grade team does an amazing job igniting the kids' enthusiasm for being scientists and DOING science!
My Project
The requested supplies will supplement an entire year's worth of activities for an entire 2nd grade! Throughout our year, we investigate and explore matter, measurement, seasons, vertebrates & invertebrates, astronomy, plants, force & motion, and magnets. It's amazing to facilitate experiments such as whether food coloring mixes more easily into cold or hot water. And the hands-down favorite is when we study chemical & physical changes with instant snow, elephant toothpaste, and flubber!
I provide science lessons and supplies for 150 students in 6 second grade classes.
This project will put authentic, hands-on experiences into our classrooms for our teachers and kids to use and enjoy. Kids can't learn to swim from pictures and they can't learn science either. They have to DO it to learn it, remember it, and internalize it. Meanwhile, they build critical thinking skills.
