This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine reading a book, as you sit on cold hard steel? That's what it's like for my students during independent reading time. In order to build reading stamina, students need to find a comfortable, just right, reading environment.
My students are fourth graders attending a title I school.
All students receive free lunch and are socio-economically challenged. Despite hardships, they come to school with a positive attitude and are eager to learn and succeed. The surrounding neighborhood is made up of warehouses and commercial buildings. Our school is special because it has special ed. students as well as general ed. students. Most teachers have some type of integration between the two. My students help the moderate to severely disabled class during their physical exercise time. It is a public school in CA.
My Project
Everyday we tell kids how important it is to read. In class students have the opportunity to read during guided reading time. Unfortunately, many students squirm around due to the discomfort of their hard chairs. Students are welcome to come to the rug and read but the floor is uncomfortable to them as well. By giving the students the option to lean on a pillow and find a comfortable position to read can help them to stay focused and read for longer periods of time. Students come to the rug throughout the day for other subjects and small groups. The book cart will also alleviate our crowded bookshelves and help keep the library more organized. You may wonder how having pillows will change lives and help students learn. My students do spend a lot of time on the rug during mini lessons, small groups, read alouds, etc. When students are comfortable and at ease, they learn.
The library should be a warm and inviting place.
I need your help to create that place for them. Imagine students laying on the rug, so engrossed in their books that they just can't put it down. Students can also find books better with an organized library. The book cart will help do just that. I need my students to read, read, read. If they can start doing that in the class, then I know it will carry over at home.
