My Students

Having work you can be successful at is the first way to create a truly inclusive classroom!

Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.

Our school is highly mobile with almost 20% of our students experiencing homelessness. Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredibly resilient. The students that learn in my classroom all have low incidence disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, and Down Syndrome. Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.

My Project

This year, I have some students in my classroom that need some lower level, hands on, basic learning tools to help them learn to work independently. We have requested wooden puzzles and sorting activities to help them with visual/spatial skills as well as sorting by colors, sizes, and shapes. We have also requested a "No-Fail" lacing activity to help build stamina for independent work as well as fine motor skills. Additionally, we requested some developmentally appropriate toys to help these children learn basic play skills and be motivated by play alongside their peers.

My students are constantly behind their general education peers.

They truly need developmentally appropriate activities so they can build foundational skills so that they can grow. Thank you for considering helping my deserving students!
