My Students

My sensational second grade classroom is in a low income/high poverty area. My students are faced with numerous challenges every day, both educationally and personally.

Their desire to learn is an inspiration to so many people.

It is motivating to watch them dream, discover, and achieve their goals. They help me to be a better teacher. I believe in them, and more importantly, they believe in themselves.

They are curious, caring young boys and girls! There are 19 students in the class that range in interests and abilities. On a typical day my students enjoy reading varying levels of children's books, experimenting with math manipulatives, doing hands-on science projects, and learning on the computer.

My students are grasping how to be accountable for their own learning. While a number of them have extreme circumstances in their home lives, they come to school every day ready to learn and interact with me and their classmates. While their experiences can be crippling to many people, these students are so resilient and do not let their home lives stop them from learning as much as they can. I really enjoy teaching my students how to be independent.

My Project

These books will continue to enhance the love of reading that I strive to create. My classroom is a place where students enjoy working on reading. I read on the carpet to them, they complete work there, and they read independently! Every day students meet with me in small guided reading groups with just-right books that help them grow as readers. They are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles just like these, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be matched to the books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.

With these new books, my students will be able to work with me to learn the skills needed to read on grade level.

They will also be able to apply these skills to books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
