Just Right Chapter Books for Students with Dyslexia!

Help me give my students books that will help them learn to love reading. I am a special education teacher and my students want chapter books just like their peers. These books will be their just right book!

My Project

Special education students with dyslexia often face unique challenges when learning to read, as they struggle with phonics skills that many of their peers acquire with relative ease. Traditional chapter books, filled with complex words and lengthy sentences, can be overwhelming for these students. Instead, "just right" chapter books designed for dyslexic readers offer a manageable entry point into independent reading.

For students who are still mastering foundational phonics, these books present text at an accessible level, reducing frustration and creating opportunities for success.

These decodable books are crafted with thoughtfully chosen vocabulary and phonics-based structures, building on skills taught in early reading instruction. By providing texts that feature "big-kid" storylines, struggling readers get to experience age-appropriate stories, allowing them to engage with material that feels interesting and mature rather than simplified or “babyish.”

Engaging in decodable books helps students develop critical reading skills: they practice fluency by reading familiar phonetic patterns, grow their vocabulary in context, and gain confidence in comprehension. When students realize they *can* read and understand books, it fosters a love of reading, giving them a sense of accomplishment. It is important to me to help nurture this love of reading and showing them that they can succeed makes all the difference in encouraging them to become lifelong readers.
