I am currently teaching 26 beginning readers in my full day kindergarten class. I teach in a big city in Illinois with nearly my entire class receiving free lunch. My students are from all over the world and I am so lucky to be working with such a diverse group.
It is important to get children excited about reading at an early age. Most students in my classroom have just learned their letters and sounds and are slowly beginning to blend sounds and begin the reading process. In order to feel successful, they need to read books at their level that are short and have few words on each page. It is important for children to understand that reading is an everyday activity, both in the classroom and at home. While my classroom library looks like it might be big, the amount of books at the reading level of a kindergarten student is minimal. I am in need of leveled readers for my students to read in and out of the classroom.
I have requested 4 different sets of books for my students to read. These are books that can be read independently in the class as well as at home. I have also requested pointers for my students to help them track the print. In addition, I have asked for sturdy bags so my students can keep the books in good condition while they take them home to read.
Teaching a child to read is the most rewarding part of my job. You can also be a part of that process by helping to supply my classroom with "just right" books for my students.
Thank you!
