This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach eighth grade to 80 students in an under served neighborhood in the South Bronx. My students come from a variety of backgrounds; however, most of them live in families experiencing poverty. Most of my students do not have many books to read at home and read below grade level.
It is critical for my developing readers to read every day in school and at home. Therefore, I developed a nightly reading log for students and families to record what books the student read each night, and for parents to record their observations or questions about the experience of reading with their child. As I reviewed the reading logs each week, I noticed a persistent theme- students were attempting to read books way too difficult, and parents were frustrated that it seemed their children didn't know how to read. One of the most critical lessons we teach our readers is to read books that are just right for them- if they read books that are too easy they don't learn new words or practice figuring out difficult words, and if students read books that are too hard, they get frustrated and never experience being a good reader. As students read just-right books, they experience just the right amount of challenge, and as a result grow as readers and grow in their enjoyment of reading.
Just-right books for eighth graders are often hard for parents to find in the library or in a bookstore, because all of my students are on different reading levels.
I am asking for a variety of books on different reading levels to provide my students with “just right” books. Please help all of the readers in my class develop a love for reading and work towards reading on grade level.
