My Students

My students are enthusiastic and curious about everything, including the spider on the floor, the letter B, and how the pencil sharpener works. They come from more than eight different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and include students with special needs and students who have experienced trauma.

Many of my students' parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunties, and uncles have all attended our neighborhood school and you can feel love and a strong sense of community throughout the building.

Within our diverse school family, one of the things my students are most excited about is each other. They love to learn and play together and our school day is filled with giggles, questions, tinkering, dancing, and conversations. It is a joy and a privilege to get to learn and grow with these amazing humans every day.

My Project

We’re about to start a new year and I’m so excited for my new kindergarteners to arrive ready to jump in and start learning. Despite their enthusiasm many of my students start the year having had little experience using their hands to hold a crayon or tie their shoe. These important tasks require fine motor skills or the use of the small muscles in their hands to make precise movements. So what do I do to help them strengthen their fingers and thumbs? I let my 5 year olds play!

Play dough, kinetic sand, beads, and stickers are endlessly engaging and help develop essential fine motor skills at the same time!

I use these materials at independent sensory and fine motor stations so my students can choose how they want to practice and learn. My new kindergarteners will be developing their sense of agency and the muscles in their hands at the same time!
