Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 6th graders from East Oakland that come from various racial, social, and economic backgrounds and communities.
The students in my classes are English learners, newcomers to the country and over 90% of students are reading 2 or more grades below level.
My Project
Growing up I loved series like Animorphs, Goosebumps and more. Even now a good book can turn great if it's part of a collection or series. The same can be said for my 6th graders this year.
This year coming off the back of distance learning, read and re-reading books with familiar themes, characters and topics has been very popular among all of my students. Seeing them dive deep into Baby-sitters Club, Amulet and Dog Man over and over, I have seen some of the most reluctant readers get excited for independent reading time!
Being able to provide the next book in a well loved series or having a full set of a series they just got into will go a long way to increasing their love as readers. As well as their strength in reading as well.
