My Students

This is the first year of in person school for our first graders here in North Oakland. We are a curious bunch who love animals, art, music, learning to read, subtracting, and most importantly, spending time together IRL (in real life).

We represent families that have lived in Oakland for generations, some having parents and grandparents that walked down these same halls, and we also have students from around the world.

We love to share about our families and what makes us special. We speak English, Spanish, and Arabic and have different learning needs, but we are all strong, brave, caring, and smart.

My Project

Our school will be having a school book fair and I would like for each student to have the option to earn the ability to pick out some fresh new books that meet their interest. It has been my experience that when students have books they love, they read them, and they read them over and over.

Every child has the right to fresh new books and after reading The Youngest Marcher, my students learned that often Black students received used and old books.

They organized a demonstration at school where they made signs that said, “we want more books”, “we want books with kids that look like us”.

Students will have the ability to earn credit for new books at the book fair and Scholastic by completing assignments and demonstrating ways they have taken care of our spaces, and each other such as be cleaning or helping a friend. These gift cards will allow all our first-grade students to purchase books that are at a comfortable reading level for them and also meet their interests. Every child should have the ability to pick out books that directly relate to their identity and interests.
