My project needs various audio books of high interest to middle school students with special needs, plus a compact disc listening center complete with headphones.

Have you ever been left out? It's a horrible feeling of loneliness-- of knowing that you're missing out on something wonderful. Well, that's how many students feel when it comes to reading, especially students with disabilities. As the middle school special education teacher for a small charter school in Arizona, I've seen the frustration that many students feel when they see that their peers are "getting it" and they just aren't. However, even struggling readers can enjoy the same books their classmates are reading through the use of audio texts. As these students listen to quality literature and follow along in their own copies of the text, they begin to acquire new vocabulary. They also hear models of fluent oral reading, which helps them to internalize the rhythm of language. Most importantly, listening and following along with audio books can help students build confidence as their comprehension levels increase and they begin to enjoy reading for the first time. This is why my project is to build a listening center complete with several copies of high-interest, quality books in paperback and audio format, plus 2 CD players with 4 headsets each. By donating to my project, you can help students with disabilities finally be included in the powerful, exciting, imaginative world of books.
