Just Keep Swimming

My students need items such as mesh bags, resistance tubing, and a white board to make their swim season successful and injury-free.

My Students

My students are primarily African-American and Hispanic. They come to school eager to learn each day, and they are excited to see what the day has in store for them.

I teach at a Title I school in Illinois where 100% of the students receive free and reduced-price lunch.

Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend, and our school also runs a food pantry for our families. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can to become successful one day.

My school feeds into the high school, which I am also currently the head women's swim coach. I am excited about this opportunity, and so are the girls, but unfortunately we do not have nearly the equipment we need to run a successful team.

My Project

This will be my first year as a head coach for the girls' swim team. They currently do not have the materials they need to be successful in the pool. My school district has cut the funding to all of the high school sports programs, leaving the athletes to fund things that would normally be paid for by the school. Since many of my girls come from low-income families, that leaves them unable to do swimming due to financial reasons.

I do not want any girls to be turned away from the swim team because they cannot afford the equipment required.

These materials are things we need to hold and organize equipment, write the workouts so all girls can see, and do things each day that will prevent injuries. My girls will use the medicine balls, jump ropes, and stretch cords to perform dry land activities that will not only compliment their swimming, but will help the girls to strengthen supplementary muscles to decrease chance of injury.
