Help me give my students an engaging, diverse, and educational reading experience. I'm looking to use Kelly Yang's, "Front Desk", in my 5th-grade classroom as a class novel.

My Students

I teach about 60-70 fun, creative, and energetic 5th-grade students. I teach three sections of English Language Arts a day at a small, public school in northern New Jersey. In our class we study reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar.

My goal is to help my students be successful readers and writers in 5th grade and beyond.

I want to create an organized, resource-filled room for them where they can thrive.

My students come from many different backgrounds and have diverse needs and abilities. In our classroom, we are one family!

I am always looking to find ways to continue to engage my students in reading and writing instruction, especially during the continuing pandemic.

My Project

"Front Desk" is about a girl named Mia, who comes to America in the early 1900s with her parents. This Chinese family takes a job managing a motel where they learn how hard it is to learn the American Dream. It tackles some big issues, like racism, immigration, socioeconomic class status, and more, but the author has written it in a way that allows children to be engaged and comprehend it well. This is such an important message and I would love to have the chance to share it with my students!
