My Students
You know you've got a fun classroom when you and your students sing part of the Mickey Mouse March as your attention getting signal! My classroom focuses on instilling a love for learning as well as an understanding of the magic of imagination.
My 25 little Imagineers love my Disney themed classroom and often refer to it as Disneyland.
I teach a group of fun loving, creative, and caring students who exhibit perseverance on a daily basis. Our school has an open-space concept, meaning that while we do have separate classrooms, they are all joined by a hallway at the back and we have no classroom doors (it's a hard one to explain!). Learning in open-space allows the students to develop a stronger sense of community because other students, teachers, and the principal are always within reach. My class loves to share things from home with each other, donate odds and ends to our class store, share their ideas about their learning, and just be together. Their hearts and minds amaze me daily.
My Project
These class sets of There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, The Tiger Rising, and Clementine, as well as a copy of Wilma Unlimited (teacher read aloud), will provide a richer reading experience for my students. Having the ability to expand our learning from stories in a textbook to novels that bring attention to real life situations (both historical and ones that are directly applicable to their lives) allows my students to engage in meaningful conversations while also learning reading comprehension skills and developing a love of reading. These novels will be used during my guided reading instruction throughout the school year. Using them, my students will practice using the Icons of Depth and Complexity to analyze characters, main ideas and details, setting, plot, dialogue, important events, and more. They will also make connections across texts, to the world, and to themselves. These stories are also great examples of how good writers write.
Remember reading some of your first chapter books in elementary school?
Remember the excitement you felt when you got lost in a series or fell in love with a certain author's books? These novels will introduce my students to some wonderful authors, meaningful life experiences, and a pathway to a love of reading. One of these novels could help one of my students find their passion. So while we must just keep swimming, swimming, swimming, we must also just keep reading, reading, reading!
