My Students
I teach elementary physical education in a multi-culturally diverse and socioeconomically disadvantaged urban neighborhood. I have kids from all walks of life, mostly African-American, Caucasian, and Hispanic.
When I first walked into my equipment closet, I noticed the school was in need of many items.
The school budget is tight and there isn't much left for equipment.
My students come from many types of homes (broken, single-parent, raised by relatives and foster students). When they come to my class, I want them to leave our school remembering all of the fun they had in physical education class and how much wonderful equipment they were given the chance to use and knowing that fitness and physical activity is fun.
My Project
We need corn hole sets for the older students. I would like to have a unit where they take part in tournaments and corn hole is a fan favorite type of game. I will need several sets but they'll have to wait for another project to get more.
Jumping rope is a very heart healthy exercise.
Our school also takes part in Jump Rope For Heart. In my equipment room, we have a lot of the hard beaded jump ropes with the hard plastic that hurts when it hits you. We are in need of vinyl ropes we can use. We only have about 5 that are good. I need enough for an entire grade to jump rope all at one time.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
