This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How many of us go to work and enjoy the smiles? Well I do everyday! I teach 20 first grade children who are English language learners, living in a high-need community.
I love every Friday because that is our "shopping" day. My student get to go shopping for books at our class library. They bring the books home to read as an assignment. They get to practice the reading skills taught in school even at home. The only problem is that I don't have enough books. Some students are reading the same books for a while. I tried to ask the administration for some funding but they only said try DonorsChoose.org. So here I am trying to get my readers to read fresh new books and to smile again.
If I receive a few more titles to enhance my library, I will see the smiles again. Most of my students come to my class in September not reading words. They picture read. When they start to use the skills I teach them I begin to see the smiles. I know they are saying to themselves "I knew I could learn how to read." Reading opens up a whole new world of empowerment. Once you read you can learn so many other things.
With your help I could make those smiles happen even more when they find a great book to read,that favorite genre or the favorite series books. The more books they read the better they will get at it. What happens in a first grade class will live with them for a life time. You can help them on that road.
