This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade class can be found in a low income community just outside a large city. Our class has a large range of abilities and needs.
My students love to get a marker in their hands and participate in the writing of a letter, story or graphic organizer. It really doesn't matter what it is. They just want to be a part of it! The same goes with reading. In first grade many of them are just discovering how letters become words and words tell great stories! They love to read big books together and point to the words they know.
The easel I have to work with now is falling apart, which discourages the children to participate in reading and writing about books. The pads of paper are bigger than the easel and fall down regularly. The Big Books fall off the ledge all the time. There is no storage to hold books, markers, or other necessary objects. This easel would make the work area a place where the children could work together with the whole class or even work in small groups or centers. It would be used daily in our centers based classroom.
You will be giving a tool to my first graders that will encourage and allow them to interact with the books we read. The storage areas of this easel will persuade them to remain organized (a new skill for many). Your gift will also allow even the meekest writer in the class to show off what s/he knows.
