This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class was lucky enough have a dance teacher funded for 6 weeks this year and that's it. I saw a spark in their spirit that I had never seen before. They were heartbroken when our class ended and they will not be able to experience dance outside of school.

I have the best 4th grade class ever!

They are some of the most enthusiastic students I've ever seen. They are all Hispanic and from low income families. They attend a school in a high poverty area where resources are scarce. Through our six dance classes I saw a determination and talent in many that I never would have seen. It helped them not only to get physically active, but the training in their concentration and memory was awesome. They performed for other classes and their parents and were so proud of themselves that it only made me prouder. They were so inspired by dance that I want to keep that momentum going. They've been asking to learn different styles (specifically Salsa) and luckily I have a dance background so I teach them dance myself as part of our PE program.

My Project

We need a boom box that will play not only compact discs, but that can accommodate an i-pod and regular radio. Because I plan on teaching different styles of dance this will make it easier to access the appropriate music. Our school has very old radios that only play tapes (what are those??) so I've been using an old boom box for compact discs and once in a while I'll bring in my i-pod dock but it is very tedious. If I have easy access to music it will be easier to switch between styles.

Please help me keep my students dancing!

I am the only dance teacher they have now and I need easy access to music. We also use music in the classroom when we write, draw, and for educational purposes. I want to keep them inspired, focused and moving!
