This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 2nd grade and my students are diverse from low economic homes. I currently teach a busy group of 20 second grade students. The majority of my children are far below grade level. These children come to school every day with very diverse needs. As their teacher and caregiver, it is my goal to ensure that my students are the most successful that they can be. In my room, we constantly look towards to future by considering ourselves the Penn State Class of 2034. Every little bit that you fund, a child gets closer to that goal.

My Project

Student engagement is the absolute key to a successful year. You can have the highest knowledge of the curriculum, but if the students are not engaged, they will not learn as much. After attending Get Your Teach On! conference in New England, I have pressed myself to engage my students at all times. My favorite thing that I have done so far is a room transformation. I would like to transform my room into Jurassic Park for a week as we study dinosaurs.

As stated in The Wild Card by Hope and Wade King, "Because in the game of life, children have no control over the hand they are dealt- You, as a teacher, are the wild card that can make a difference in your students' lives".

I believe that a Jurassic Park room transformation is a key component to being the wild card. The fake leaves, green paper, plastic roll and inflatable dinosaurs will decorate our room to really help the children feel like they are in Jurassic Park. The safari hats will be an added bonus so that each child has something to wear to feel like they are part of the transformation. These items will engage the students as they use nonfiction dinosaur texts to learn about nonfiction text features. We will also engage in a dinosaur themed math process and writing.
