Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school consists of over 700 students in preschool through fifth grade. Almost 90% of our population is considered low income and qualifies for free lunch. Our school represents a wide range of cultures.

My students are newcomers from another country and struggling readers that come to the learning center on a daily basis to receive extra support in language development and reading.

Although they struggle to read independently, they enjoy read-alouds and shared readings where they are able to engage in rich discussions that lead towards making connection, partner sharing, retelling stories or sharing newly learned knowledge with their peers through different collaborative groupings.

My Project

Right before going on vacation, the students were excited about the Olympics; as a matter of fact, that's all they would talk about.

Some students approached me and asked if they could have an Olympic of their own; in their words, "A friendly competition with a variety of fun games."

Their motivation to actively engage in physical activity beyond the mandatory 60 minutes, inspired this kid-inspired project. The following are some of the games they suggested: playing volleyball with the Emoji beach balls, 3 on 3 basketball tournament, balancing on the wobble deck, team racing on the strider and many other fun games.

With this project, students will actively be engaged in physical fitness while at the same time having fun and leading a healthier lifestyle!
