Jungle Environmental Science Dance

My students need twelve tutu skirts and twelve monkey ear and tail sets.

My Students

I teach at a Title I Magnet elementary school located in a low income area. At our school all students receive dance once a week.

My students are in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

They receive dance instruction once a week throughout the year. I also have four performing groups that meet once a week and one after school group that meets twice a week. Students also meet twice a week for Broadway Bound group. Most of my dance groups are involved in the Musical Theater production every year. Most of my students would not receive dance or musical theater outside of school due to financial difficulties.

My Project

My students are studying jungle animals and their habitats. I am working on a dance integration project that includes environmental science and dance. The students are learning about different animals and their habitats. They will then learn movement that the animals would do along with the levels that the animals travel. We will create a jungle dance that will go along with our school musical Jungle Book. Students will perform their dances in the end of the year musical. They need costumes so that they can look and feel like the animal that they are studying. We are working on Monkey and Bear dances. The monkey ears and tails can be used for both and the brown tutus will help them look like dancing animals. This is a wonderful way to integrate dance and science.
