Many students struggle in math everyday. They find it confusing, baffling, and just plain hard! Having high-quality story books that introduce math skills will help students understand and master many math concepts.
I teach a very loving, active group of 22 2nd graders.
They love to learn new skills and expand their knowledge. Currently, math is a struggle for many of them. Many new concepts are being introduced.
Our school is in a small, rural town in Tennessee. It is the only public elementary school in the county and currently enrolls over 1,000 students from Pre-K to 4th grade. The majority of our students receive free/reduce lunch.
My Project
I am asking for 2 sets of Math Start books (level 2 & 3). These books are high-quality story books that introduce different math skills that the students must master. These books use different story elements and characters to help teach the math concept or skill. By adding the story elements to the math skills, the students are more likely to remember the skill and apply it to other subject areas.
I believe that literature is important in EVERY subject.
Sometimes it is difficult for students to see that in order to do math, they need to be good readers. By using the Math Start books with their math skills, they will see that reading is an important part of EVERY subject, including math.
