My Students

I serve students with autism and intellectual disabilities, ages 8-11, in a special needs school. Our school serves seven districts in our county and students range in ages 3-21. We are a close community of support staff and administration that works to provide the best services for students with cognitive, physical, and emotional disabilities. My classroom is full of happy and curious students who are still learning the basic foundations of social skills and play skills. We explore all areas of sensory, and we light up every day when we can explore new toys and materials. Despite any limitations, they make great strides every day to improve in academic and functional skills. My students love to be read to and have stories come alive on a page for them.

My students require opportunities for sensory and motion to build the foundation for academic and functional concepts.

They require an adapted curriculum for all subject areas and direct instruction in the classroom in one-on-one or small groups. My students need objects to explore in order to be successful during reading instruction.

They are a great group of kids that deserve every opportunity to learn according to their needs.

My Project

Every child makes sense of their world through experiences, motion, and hands on learning. Many students in our classroom need motion and jumping as a means of strengthening muscles, working on balance, and using the motion to help regulate their emotions and meet their sensory diets.

So many of our students have a variety of sensory needs that need to be met in order to give them the greatest chance for success academically, socially, and emotionally in our school setting.

With the use of trampolines with a bar, students are able to work on physical therapy goals and meet their sensory needs. By providing motion, our students regulate emotions and help them focus during classroom instruction.
