Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Ever hear people say, "I'm not a Math person, or, I didn't like math when I was in school? Most likely they didn't like math because they didn't feel successful at it. I want my students to not only understand math, but to like it.
I teach at a unique urban school.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds. I teach students Kindergarten through fifth grade, and many of them have individual needs that do not allow them to attend school daily. Many of the students I teach have emotional and social issues, have frequent medical treatments, have safety concerns, have difficulty in a traditional school setting and/or are homeless. My students each face their own challenges every day outside of school.
My Project
I want my students to look forward to math. I want them to feel successful when they close their math books. I want them to enjoy math. So many of them groan or roll their eyes when it is time for math. JUMP Math's core belief is that all students can succeed in math and that math classes should be a source of enjoyment for students. By reducing difficult concepts to manageable steps, JUMP Math enables all students to experience success and positive reinforcement that creates engagement and propels further learning. I look forward to implementing this program using a balance of depth, careful scaffolding, guided and independent work, continuous assessment and confidence building, which will provide students with what they need to truly succeed. I will use the math materials with my students in small group or individual settings to maximize student learning. I hope to see a change in their attitudes toward math as they begin to experience more success.
By funding this project, you can help to create some real mathematicians!
My hope is that my students will see math in a new way when we approach math using the requested materials. I want to create lifelong learners, with a passion for math! I can't wait for my students to start using this new math program. I can't wait to see them smile when I say it's time for math, instead of groan. Please help us learn to love math!
