Jumping Through Hoops For Embroidery!

My students need textile tools to express their contemporary ideas using historical craft techniques.

My Students

Crafts have been made by all cultures throughout time. I'd like my students to share in an experience had by generations before them. Textile crafts are a rich learning tool. Using needle and thread to stitch images of importance will teach them about themselves and connect them to the world of crafts.

My awesome students travel from all over the city to come to our academic magnet school.

They are racially diverse. Seventy-five percent of my students live below the poverty level. My students are very smart and have bright futures. They hold so much promise. Over 90% go on to college. My heart swells with pride when I write this because these kids believe their education is a way to make it in the world.

My Project

I always worked very hard to bring the world of art and art experience to my students. At my school, my students are so bright and engaged. I need to provide the best art education possible for them. In a summer course I took, I learned about embroidery crafts. This inspired me to bring embroidery and other textile techniques to my crafts and art students. I want to purchase muslin, embroidery floss, hoops and more, so my highschoolers can make stitched images. Weaving needles, scissors and more will round out our collection of textile supplies so my students can learn weaving and sewing. Textile crafts hold a strong connection to world cultures. To enhance the experience, I will link the work we do with craft traditions around the world.

This work connects students to crafts that people have made since civilization began.

Textile crafts hold so much value as a learning tool. My students will gain sewing skills that they will always be able to tap into later in life. Its amazing to see students who never did crafts, do it and become skilled at it. My students will also learn that crafts are a valuable means of self expression. As they learn specific stitching techniques, they will create images that hold meaning to them.
